Protecting Your Search Engine Ranking Part 3

The fourth way in which you could be banned accidentally is through the legitimate use of an off-page tactic, and it may not be quite so easy to avoid. This is through conducting link popularity campaigns.

Protecting Your Search Engine Ranking - Part 3:- You have been advised to increase your link popularity and you have been successful in exchanging links with a number of sites. All seems to be going well, but a few weeks later you find to your horror that you have been banned. You are certain you haven’t done anything wrong. What is going on?

The problem is very likely related to certain sites known as “link farms”. “Link farm” is the term applied either to a site that has posted a very large number of links to other completely unrelated sites, or to a group of sites created solely for the purpose of linking to each other, in order to increase link popularity.

There is one point that must be made absolutely clear. There is a popular belief that you can get banned if an unrelated site is linking to yours, or if a link farm is linking to yours. This is NOT TRUE! If it were, it would be easy for your competitors to find ways to get rid of you! It is not links on other people’s sites that could get you banned, but links on your own site. The links in question are those to a so-called bad neighbor.

A “bad neighbor” is a site that has been banned, either for being a link farm, or for other illegal practices like cloaking. You can tell if a site has been banned if the Page rank box on the Google toolbar is solid gray.

Of course you wouldn’t link to a banned site, would you?

Well, of course you wouldn’t knowingly do so! But just supposing you were doing all the right things, and while conducting a link campaign exchanged links with a site that was doing well and had a reasonable Page rank (showing some green on the Google toolbar). But unbeknown to you, this site started indulging in illegal practices and got itself banned. Your problem is, that you have a link to this site and you are damaged by your association with it, just as socially you are damaged by keeping bad company. By having a link to this site you appear to be endorsing its bad practices.

So suddenly you find yourself dropped and banned by Google and you haven’t done anything wrong! You probably wouldn’t think to keep checking the sites you are linking to – but you must do so, to make sure you stay out of trouble.

Being banned is not a pleasant experience and is even worse if you don’t deserve it. Take extra care with your optimizing tactics and you should stay out of trouble.
